Thanks Filip! Yeah, trying to outcompete head-to-head can get you there but by destroying collective value… While “finding new fields” can create entire new games!
As for short-term thinking - still trying to find some solution to that, not easy at all 😅
There is something evolutionary about short term thinking - shows up in experiments with small kids and candy. As an organism you have to make the most of it when you can - on the spot.
The only way is to align motivations. You can not expect a manager to think long term when he has short-termed goals and compensation. The motivation problems exist because of separation of ownership and management.
Yeah, but... It's all equilibriums and trade-offs all the way to the bottom! Right?
I'm a huge fan of systems design, including incentives and such. And yet there are critical advantages to both "skin in the game" and specialization of roles!
The right point all depends on the environment. And yet the environment keeps changing! Which is why I like having a variety of options at hand... as Sun Tzu said, the great general never gets stuck in a position from which he can't retreat.
Wonderfully written. Really inspiring.
Problem is short term thinking - you don't need no strategy for that.
Loved the unique position you mentioned - don't try to be the best - try to be the only!
